The war in Iraq and protest songs

Okay, the next movement we are going to talk about is the war in Iraq and basically what we will just call today's global struggle or social movements today that really cause people to get up and write. Now, artist that we would associate with this or artist that we really would associate with this are people are like Green Day who I would kind of call the mutual suspects. I mean, their American Idiot is just a perfect example of what they do, but other artists have gotten involved here too. I mean, a girl group like the Dixie Chicks who you would think really could not be more benign if you recall at the beginning of the 21st century they actually were having their albums burnt like it was Natzi Germany and all this because they got up at a concert and they said, well, they were not really happy but they were at the same place as George Bush, and apparently you do not say that if you want to continue to have a vibrant singing career.

Now, of course a lot of people who got under respect like including myself in the Dixie Chicks, who might not have taken a note of them kind of turned around and said, well, okay, they had something to say and they are standing up for it, and you can really appreciate that.

Now although both Green Day and the Dixie Chicks are great examples, I think probably the best song to encapsulate this movement is, 'All these things I have done' by The Killers. And let me quote it for you, they essentially say, 'I have got soul, but I am not a soldier', and I really like that because they kind of exert it, it is okay to love your county and to want to protect it and to want to keep it safe, but potentially not want to go to war and not some of your child off to go to war, before he is old enough to drink, and get killed, and potentially there is another way.
