Sarah: This is diet.com video, I am your host Sarah and once again I am joined by our clinical nutritionist Alexis. Today, Alexis, you told me that you wanted to share with me a few diet tips or tricks regarding Cinnamon. So, we have some here with us and tell me a little bit more about what is so special about this spice?
Alexis: Believe it or not, it has literal, medical or medicinal effects. And it is brought in to sort of the American spotlight because Chinese medicine has been known about this for hundred of years, its power to regulate blood sugar especially in people who have type 2 diabetes.
Sarah: Okay, now we have two kinds here. We have the sticks and we also have the regular raw ground powder. In regards to the powder, what do you do? Just swallow a teaspoon or do you put it on food?
Alexis: A teaspoon a day either like in your coffee before you brew it because heat does not destroy its powers. On your salad, believe it or not, on your oatmeal or tea. The sticks are most appropriate for tea.
Sarah: So how long have people actually known about this benefits?
Alexis: Well I think the Chinese have known for many 500 of years but about 5 or 6 years ago, there was a study that on Pakistan which started this whole conversation. And I would say on the last year or so, we are beginning to talk about it here in this country. But I do want to inject a word of caution, if somebody does have type 2 diabetes and they are taking some type of medication to regulate their blood sugar, in no way should they change that medication without consulting a doctor. However, by using Cinnamon, it could actually reduce the amount of medication you need. So, you do have to get your doctor involve. Also, pregnant women, we do not want using Cinnamon for these purposes.
Sarah: Well, thanks again for coming by and sharing with us some of your little diet tips and tricks. I always enjoy them and hopefully you guys at home do too and we hope to see you next time.
