3DS Max 9 - Importing Poser Models to 3DS Max P.1

Hi there! It is a day for VideoEffectUniverse.com and we have got quite an interesting tutorial for you today. It is involving three set of programs.

As you can see I am in Poser at the moment. We have got a figure on the screen which is Michael and if I show you a quick render of what he looks like, not too bad. But basically what we are trying to do is to get Michael with all this textures into 3D Studio Max9. You cannot do this using a program called Poserfusion or Body Studio. However, I found that it is not very, very stable with Max. I find that it keeps on crashing every now and again. When you are in Max you can not animate the limbs or anything like that or basically what you have than in Poser is what you have got. So an alternative way to get it into 3D Studio Max, just to show you that I have got you in there, if I just go into Max and do a quick render for you and there we have him. We have Michael in 3D Studio Max9.

So, it is quite simple what you need to do. What you need to have is a program called Deep Exploration Five by Right Hemisphere. Now the program is quite useful because it imports models of files from other programs such as Cinema 4D, Poser, anything like that and it converts them into files that can be used in 3D Studio Max.

Now, obviously what you need to do once you get into Deep Exploration, you should have a screen like this. What we want to do is go into your C Directory, Program Files, find your Poser Directory, then you want to go your Run Time, and you drift Geometries. Now when go for it, I mean, obviously not all Poser objects can be brought into Max because objects like James, Simon, things like that, they are actually saved in a file. Deep Exploration does not recognize it. You can not actually import them. But any third party models that you have downloaded can be exported into Max as long as they are OBJ Files, okay?

So, anyway, now we go into the Geometries as we have found here and I am going to find Michael, where is he? He is in Dance People. As you can see you got the OBJ Files here which is also native to Cinema 4D and where is he? Here he is. I am going to click him and move him into the top here. Now what you should have is a 3D representation of Michael. The controls and movements for rotation are quite tricky to use with the mouse so you do need to get that practice on how to do that. The left button rotates, the right button zooms you in and out and both together, up and down.

Now, what we want to do on this section here is basically all the body parts, you have got the chest-neck color, abdomen, shin, all the rest of it. We want to scroll down and see get some material section. Open up the folder here and you should have basically all of the different parts of the body that have textures on them. Now what you want to do is click on the first, which is skin torso, right click and go to material properties. As you can see you have a similar set up as in Max, you know, you got your gloss specular level and your diffuse colors and the rest of it. Now you do not really want to mess with this just yet, because later on once you have exported it to Max you can edit it there.. And trust me you would not want to be doing this now because there is so much move and about that you have to do that you just really, really would not want to do just yet. So we will forget this bit for the moment. What we want to click is on the map?s button here. As you could see you have got diffuse, bump, opacity, reflection, refraction and all the rest of it. Now with the diffuse,, click on browse. As you can see we are in this folder here, Dance People, which is here, and when you Out One, Out Two, and you should be on the Run Time section. And when you are in the Run Time, go to textures, and then what you want to do is try and find and like your texture for your character. I have actually got a third party texture set for Michael, and that is in here. So I want to go to Atlantis Store on Andrei. Now if I right click and show you the font nails, you could see we have got all this different textures here, for all this different eyes you can have, you have got all this skin, you have got eyelashes, you have got all the rest of it. What I am going to is select Body One. It looks okay. And as you can see that let us apply that to his torso because that is actually the torso part of the map.
