How To Cut Your Dog's Nails

Hi! I am Dr. Lauren at petside.com. People often ask me how to cut their pets' nails at home. A lot of people are worried, because they don't want to hurt their pet and they are not sure exactly where they can cut. I am going to show you how you can safely cut your pet's nails at home.

Before you start, you just want to make sure that you have the right materials.

First, you want to have a really good nail clipper. I prefer the type of nail clippers that cut like this.

Second, you want to make sure that you have a styptic powder. Styptic powder is something that when applied to the tip of pet's nails, it will stop bleeding. This is just in case you cut pet's nails a little too short and they do bleed. If your dog has black nails, just take the tips off because you can't really see where the vein is. But if your dog has white nails, you could see where the vein ends, and you know exactly how much you could take off.

So all you want to do is gently snip the ends of your pet's nails. Try and have treat thereby, so that you can reward your pet for good behavior.

Remember, if you do make your pet's nails bleed, all you need to do is take a little bit of this powder and press it at the tip of the nail.
