My parents became hoarders from living through The Great Depression. We never threw away anything which could be fixed (and Dad was good at fixing things) or reused for another purpose other than it was intended. I still use items that they used. Most of the time my mother kept things looking relatively tidy, but I never was able to do that. I had a messy room and have a messy apartment now. I will not have anyone come in to help me though because no one else understands the sentimental value some things have for me and as a writer, books and papers are valuable to me, which other people would consider clutter and throw out. I never know when I may need to use them.
