I am a professional writer, and the first of my generation in my family born in the United States. With ancestors sprinkled across the sparkling waters of the Caribbean, my thoughts are of childhood memories -- spices, scents, flavors, textures -- all brought to America to delight my senses, and those I surround myself with. In these hard times of struggle and uncertainty, these are the memories that spill into my mind. These are the thoughts I bring to you -- in the form of story telling, recipes and other tidbits that make up my wacky little universe ... Welcome!
Update: I just earned my first PENNY! When I saw that, I almost peed my pants! My grandmother always used to say, if you've got a pulse, you've got a purpose!
My first book has just been published and distributed independently. THE BAJAN'S GRANDDAUGHTER is the story of my grandparents' journey from Barbados, West Indies to America in the 1920, memoirs of growing up in their household, and a collection of old time Caribbean recipes. Please feel free to check it out and explore your senses. Message me for information on how to obtain a copy.
Have a great day, everyone ...

Hmmm. Wonder of the Obama Campaign creators took in consideration the 9th Calvary's motto. Thanks for some interesting African American Solider facts.

Did you really mix a quart of ice cream into the batter? Just wanted to confirm before trying this! Sounds delish indeed. Thanks.

Thank you, Deborah -- I am (very) honored to have heard from you. My grandmother (also a great seamstress in NY "back in the day") first told me about Ms. Lowe when I was very young. I couldn't find a lot of information on her, but was fascinated by what I learned.

Yes, I did. The key is to allow the ice cream to melt before adding it to the cake mix. Once melted, it's really not that much, but it replaces milk or water. If you find the batter too "wet" (I never did, but cake mixes can vary from box to box); you can add a bit of flour (by the teaspoon) to thicken it. However, I wouldn't add anything; this makes a very moist cake/cupcakes. hth

This is a very good method for your Jello Cakes! I do several also, but will give this a try; recently bought some black cherry jello; and you can get black cherry soda! Oh, boy, here we go! Thank you!

i love the hummingbird story! I have hummers in my garden every year, I guess because I grow what they like. They never care for my feeders, the sugar water, etc., just like to stick their beaks up trumpet shaped flowers. I've also noticed this year they are much more comfortable around people - coming closer than in years past. But, your story gave me more insight than I had before. Thanks!
