John Black and the Bell Witch - compilation of tales written by 8th graders by dj_lyons

In 2002, I conducted a 10-week Creative Writing & Research Class. Our primary focus was the Tennessee Bell Witch, the poltergeist who haunted the Bell family from 1817- 1821. This is a compilation of what my 8th-Grade students wrote about John Black.

I read your thoughtful response and I agree with a lot of what you said. As the teacher whose students started Day Without Hate three years ago, I can tell you that their original prupose was to include EVERYONE and for everyone to feel welcome in Standley Lake. I (not Mr. Ceriani, btw) chose not to read to names of the two killers at Columbine on April 20 because that is what the family members of the victims at Columbine have requested. It's a very tricky situation, because the two boys were not evil figures like Osama bin Laden or Hitler. In fact, many many teenagers can relate to the pain they felt as they walk around the halls of their high school. I know when I was in school, I could relate to being bullied and pciked on. And I could relate to the anger and (at times) hatred the two boys at CHS felt. However, my ability to relate stops when I think about the actions they took. I cannot excuse the pain they inflicted on thousands of people. I know that the two boys were in a great deal of pain themselves. This is one of the big reasons we have a days without hate. So for one day, we can try to make everyone - no matter what you look like, no matter what you wear - feel welcome at Standley Lake.
