Oh, one more point. While The Elements of Style is a great book for writing principles in general, English language learners can benefit more immediately from expanding their vocabulary with the Cambridge series Vocabulary in Use. And if folks are nervous about their grammar - which is only briefly touched on in the wonderful The Elements of Style, I would suggest the Cambridge Grammar in Use series. Good luck with your writing.

Fine suggestions - especially for the vast majority of English language learners who can not study abroad. I would also add listening to first rate radio programs from the BBC, Voice of America, and National Public Radio. Both English learners and teachers, for example, should find This I Believe (www.thisibelieve.org) an excellent resource for fascinating listening to and reading fascinating personal essays. Of course, they can also submit their own essay about their personal beliefs. I have used the website with considerable success with advanced ESL students. Finally, join or create a conversation club. Speaking English - like so many activities in life - gets easier with more practice. You don't have to speak perfect English to clearly communicate, and making English your friend as you make new friends speaking English can be fun.
