About Me:

The proud father of identical twin girls and a son, after my marriage unraveled I traveled. I migrated from Philadelphia to San Jose where I lived and worked in California for three years.  My wedding ring leapt off the Golden Gate Bridge.  Workwise, the West is less demanding and less permissive while the East is more demanding but more permissive.  The rats are larger in the East Coast rat race but the traffic is worse in the West Coast.  After that I lived with my girlfriend in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and learned about the Midwest and what cold really is.  A -28 windchill is something you and the dog never forget.  Then I moved back to California, Southern this time where I lived and worked in Los Angeles.  When the hills are on fire the sun turns bloddy red.  Friday's rush hour begins Thursday at noon.  I never understood the line in the Eagles song "You can check out but you can never leave" until I lived there.  Like everywhere else, good and bad prevail but freedom and respect for fellow man is numero uno.  After that I lived in Scottsdale, Arizona where they really do have an egg frying contest on the pavement each year.  And it's not always a dry heat, either.  They do have have rain and although infrequently, it immediately turns to steam when it hits the pavements producing humidity that could stop a herd of charging rhino dead in there tracks.  Now I'm in Atlanta, Georgia enjoying the colorful cross-section of humanity and the friendly people.  I think the movie Deliverance kind of recked things down here, unfortunately.  Georgians are among the friendliest creatures on the planet.

I agree with Mark Twain's philosophy that if humor has one sole purpose it's to expose and destroy fake, fraud and superstition through laughter, "the greatest weapon known by mankind."

Wild Things in the Suburbs by marie.thomas

As man uses fewer residential pesticides and herbicides, and seeks more methods of environmentally safe living for their families, there is no doubt that wildlife will continue to move in around us in the small green areas that are left.

How To Live With Coyotes (Coy-Wolves) in the Suburbs by marie.thomas

Coyotes are intelligent creatures that, like wolves, have taken the unwitting brunt of man’s vengeance for hundreds of years. But unlike wolves, they weren’t driven to extinction; they simply learned to lay low, change their habits or diet, or do whatever was necessary to survive.

Good story and good story teller.

HardworkinJudy on The Tips Here Really Suck on 20th, Aug 2009

What a wit! You had me hanging on like this was an Alfred Hitchcock movie. Unfortunately, I am familiar with these unsavory characters. One can't like in the South Bronx and not be.

for Understanding Food Labels at the Supermarket on 29th, Jan 2010

While exposing the truth of what food labels truly indicate, your article goes on to suggest healthier alternatives. Albert Einstein claimed we must "question everything" including what we know to be true, and after reading this I am not quite "the wise shopper" I thought I was and feel I've been flim-flammed by creative advertising: particulary, with the wording that often means the opposite of what I perceived. I still cannot believe the vast amount of knowledge that can be conveyed in such few words. What's a greater mystery is why this article isn't handed out to the public by the entrances of supermarkets. Thank you for unmasking this "tool" that clevery increases profits for businesses at a cost we cannot afford. Anyone who is genuinely concerned with the health of themself and their loved ones must read this article.

for Why Not Take Vitamin C? on 28th, Jan 2010

I don't mean to dramatize but I believe in exercise. Use it or lose it, be cool don't abuse it. Good food, good rest and I'll bet you thought this was going to rhyme. Thank you. I'm still recuperating from your vaccination article and I truly needed this. Thanks, again.

for I Don’t Wanna Die From the Flu — Or the Vaccinations! on 28th, Jan 2010

Well cut off my legs and call me "Shorty!" Thank you for this enlightening piece of information that scrares me beyond words confirming my belief that the most horrific realities are totally non-fiction and grounded in truth, not imagination. When I was a kid I knew needles were bad for you! Nobody listened to me! Now after reading this and seeing vaccinations are heavily contaminated with all kinds of time bombs including "stealth-type viruses" that can cause degenerative brain disease ten or twenty years from now.......I wish I never got the flu shot and I'm never getting another one. for Exaggerated Claims of Executive Privilege; Archibald Cox – A Man of Uncompromising Integrity on 28th, Jan 2010

I like to believe true inspiration transcends death and by sheer will of the dream, will live on after everyone of us is gone. Archibald Cox, with "unquestioned integrity," stood alone and stood tall. “To these books about us, that’s to whom I am responsible.” These are the words of vision. insight, wisdom, compassion and most importantly, adventure and bravery. Outstanding article that speaks volumes and keeps the torch lit. Thank you.

for Visiting the Oregon coastal town of Newport north of the bridge on 27th, Jan 2010

Count me in. The next time I visit my dad in Bandon and take a drive up the coast I know where I'll be. Newport sounds like a nice destination. Thank you.

for U.S. Jewish Philanthropies Unaware They Fund Openly Anti-Israel Groups on 27th, Jan 2010

Internationally, political collusion has led the "trusting donor" to the slaughterhouse repeatedly. If common sense exists, it demands the recipients of donations to be held responsible for seeing where the donations ultimately wind up. As businesses are responsible for seeing that toxic waste makes it to the proper containment, not just removing it from the premises, maybe the top of the food chain can learn something from the bottom of the food chain and follow the "life" of the donation from beginning to end. Excellent article and one that will hopefully open eyes.

for Wild Things in the Suburbs on 25th, Jan 2010

Anyone who has seen the "1925 serum run to Nome" and the heroic efforts of Gunnar Kaasen and his team of 13 dogs led by the husky Balto during a blizzard throughout the night knows what a canid is and how remarkable they are. Together, they transported 20 pounds of serum 54.3 miles on the last leg of a 674 mile relay that prevented a diptheria epidemic throughout northern Alaskan villages. Hopefully, through awarness, we can co-exist with those who have been here before us. As this article suggests, the time has come to explore the practicality of proper fencing rather than extinguishing the lives of our best friend, the canid.

for If Bird Spiders Eat Baby Birds, Do Wolf Spiders Eat Baby Wolves? on 25th, Jan 2010

Things like this can happen when Noah hands the checklist to his assisitant ansd excuses himself for a minute. Anything with eight legs, eight eyes, two fangs (venomous or not), and growls, rears up on its forelegs, and goes on hunting expeditions and leaves trip-wires by the entrance to their underground burrow and can actually devour birds is nothing I want to meet face to face. "No known fatality" is the other side of the coin called "Dead men tell no tales," right? One thing you left out that's burning inside, do these things ever take up residence under beds? In the scheme of things I feel I'm as brave as the next man but spiders such as these could make me run and scream at the same time. "Pets." Who in their right mind....? Great article. Memorable, in fact. I think it's time to replace the batterries in the flashlight.

for Plastics Recycling Numbers on the Bottoms of Containers Are Resin ID Codes; What They Mean and How to Use Them for Safety and Recycling on 7th, Sep 2009

Having lived in the green city of Oakland, California (believe it or not) we recycled the recyclables and even felt compelled to wash them out at times. The greenest cities run straight down the West Coast beginning with Seatlle, Portland, etc. and have been aware of the codes on the bottom of plastics for a while now. Contrary to popular belief, Californians are not crazy. They're environmentally conscious and respect the world and are well aware of it's vulnerability. Some East Coast states, particulary in the Northeast are aware of these things as well. Paul McCartney's quote bodes well: "Think Globally, Act Locally."

for Is Global Warming the Issue–or Global Cooling? on 7th, Sep 2009

Aside from the accelerated rate we are causing, Global Warming isn't something we spawned in Detroit. Global Cooloing which should follow, undoubtedly a natural event, the media likes to take credit for and imply ownership which takes ludicrous beyond sight. Consider the earth is 6 billion years old, television is 60 years old, who's pulling the wool over who's eyes here? When the media uses the words "since we've been keeping records, this breaks the record in terms of heat on this date." Hello. How many times has "this date" occurred in 6 billion years. Are we sbsolutely sure this is a "record breaker?" Warming, Cooling, this is all eclipsed by the future of our sun which will one day become a red giat, expand and swallow the earth in the proces regardless of the current natural phase it will be going through at the time. Space colonization is the only feasible exit we have and I understand this is actually in its pioneer stages today. Flattering ourselves into believing we can control nature is a problem that exists in the human ego. We can prepare for these changes, defend ourselves but as Kurt Vonnegut Jr. said "If people think nature is their friend, then they sure don't need an enemy." Tsunamis, earthqaukes, tornados, hurricanes, wild fires and floods come to mind. What's a few volcano or a few glaciers?
