Born in Indiana in 1966 to parents who were not legally able to get married there, being an interracial couple. Grew up in New York City. Now living in Decatur, Georgia (part of the metro Atlanta area), have newly begun working as an independent consultant after eight years at the Centers for Disease Control. Traded much job security and famously juicy government bennies for quality of life, being my own boss, flexibility, and more time to create and participate in various volunteer efforts. Photography (film) has been a love of mine since adolescence, and it is wonderful to have time to enter photo contests/exhibits, and to make my own custom wood frames. I am also a competitive fencer and love keeping a vegetable garden (though can't say I'm all that competitive at it yet!). I also enjoy developing websites for artists and non-profit types.

I was intrigued to learn of this site from my cousin. I tend to detest social networking sites, which lean heavily toward the vapid and inane. Here, however, the point is interest, learning, information and substance. How refreshing!
Real Eggnog (not the stuff from the carton)
I call it ice cream for grown ups. Thick, creamy, fluffy (thanks to the egg whites), strong (though obviously you can adjust the alcohol content to taste), not thin and runny or cloyingly sweet and full of perfumey spices like the store bought stuff. It's a celebratory moment every Christmas

Palestinian/Jordanian Cucumber Salad
by CarlaPW | in Food & Drinks > Salads
In the mood for a Middle Eastern dinner, I discovered a nice, simple recipe for a cucumber salad on Recipe Zaar. Very refreshing, great side dish with lamb, and a nice dipping sauce for whatever bread you choose.

Glaucoma & People of African Descent
by CarlaPW | in Health & Nutrition > Diseases & Conditions
Glaucoma is a condition that can cause blindness by damaging the optic nerve. People of African heritage are extra susceptible to getting glaucoma and to going blind from it. It often starts about 10 years earlier among Blacks than others. The National Eye Institute recommends that African Americans get tested every one to two years after age 40.

Book Review: Pig Candy: Taking My Father South, Taking My Father Home: a Memoir, by Lise Funderburg
by CarlaPW | in Art & Entertainment > Literature
Geniously written, Pig Candy is a memoir written by the adult daughter of a man during his last months of life. Funderburg intimately brings the reader into family dynamics shaped by the uniquely American experiences of a biracial family. It is an honest, loving, witty portrayal of a daughter's unconditional love and the challenges of losing a parent.
I haven't added any favorites yet.
