Memorial Day is set aside to remember and honor those men and women who have sacrificed their time and ultimately their lives for our freedom. Regardless of what you think about war, these brave souls deserve our honor and gratitude.

A young man joins the military. Remember him.
..I don’t know him
He’s trained to be strong so he can fight. Remember him.
..Not someone I know
He is sent to the battlefield to kill our foes. Remember him.
..Not my foes
He gives his life so that we can be free. Remember him.
..Me? So I can be free?
He dies for our freedom, for our rights. Remember him.
..My rights?
He dies to preserve our rights to free speech. Remember him.
..He died for me?
He dies to preserve our rights to worship. Remember him.
..He died for me.
He dies to preserve all our rights. Remember him.
..He died for me!
He dies to preserve our way of life. Remember him.
..He was so brave
He dies so that other young men can live. Remember him.
..He was so self-less
He died. Remember him.
..I’m so sorry
He died. Remember him.
..What can I do?
He died – REMEMBER HIM
..I remember
He died – Be Grateful
..Thank you. Thank you. I don’t know your name, but THANK YOU. I remember now.

A note from the author:

Please recognize that this poem is timeless. Whether the soldier or sailor fought in our revolutionary war, or in Desert Storm, his intentions and love for this country are the same.

My apologies to the brave women who have also given of themselves for our rights and freedom. Thank you, thank all of you! Your bravery and sacrifice has not gone unnoticed.

Those of us who are steadfastly anti-war (or better stated, pro-peace) must still respect and honor those who step up to make sure our rights to free speech and the pursuit of life, liberty and happiness are preserved.
