Like any other ponds, koi ponds also need meticulous cleaning and maintenance in order to sustain a healthy and well-balanced environment for the koi and other accompanying marine organisms to inhabit. The process should be consistent and on a regular basis.

Koi ponds usually need a biological filter that cleanses the water of wastes, bacteria and other toxic materials; an aerator that exposes air into the water for oxygen supply and allows continuous flow of water; and a pump that causes water to circulate through the filter and the aerator. These mechanical parts can be hidden behind plants so as not to disrupt its scenic view.

Care for the koi ponds could be generally distinguished into two categories, the seasonal and routine maintenance. The former is the much scrupulous and detailed kind of cleaning and typically being done twice a year. It is the period to replace and renew everything in preparation for the coming year. While the other cleaning is performed if needed only, usually twice a week depending on the structure of the pond.

During the seasonal maintenance, just about all the water in the pond should be drained out. In this manner every rock layers particularly underneath can easily be reached when scrubbing off algae. Barley Straw Extract and Pond Balance help control growth of algae. It takes 4-6 weeks for the extract to become effective while the latter is used monthly for preventive care.

Every segment of the water circulation pump should be disconnected for cleaning. Every bulky up to the tiniest part of the pond should be thoroughly clean and all gaskets be newly lubricated. Inspect for any leaks, holes, cracks, and frail areas on all pipe tubing.

If using Ultraviolet sterilizer bulbs, now is the time to replace them with new ones. The maximum lifespan of a bulb is about 6-8 months, hence the need for a twice a year replacement.

Biological filtration system must also be replaced even if consistently maintained. They are only efficiently usable for a few months.

Routine maintenance is a lighter workload. Done only when needed, it includes making sure all mechanical components are functioning well mostly the filtration system. Vacuum out some of the water and exchanged it with fresh supply regularly. You could also add into the pond the algae removers and biological enhancers at regular periods.

Using chlorine for the cleaning purposes of the entire pond can be toxic and fatal to koi fishes. Make sure that chlorine strains must be totally neutralized before adding new water to the pond. Chlorine and coins tossed into the pond are both very hazardous to the koi.

It is also recommended to include portions in the pond where koi could hide when being threatened by predators such as raccoons, ducks, cats, turtles, herons and some winged animals. Preferably, nets or wires around the pond could be put up for safeguard.

If it’s possible, aquatic plants surrounding the pond should be fenced because the koi may nibble on them.

Foods uneaten usually accumulate under the pond and rot eventually becoming toxic to the koi. Scoop out the uneaten food debris right after feeding to eliminate the wastes. You could also include attuned bottom-feeding fishes into the pond to help address the problem. The koi’s metabolism slows during cold climates and so it is practical to reduce the feeding sessions.

Preserving the safe and harmonious balance of your koi pond is essential. The care and maintenance tips mentioned will only be a guide in achieving the dynamic ecosystem; it is in your dedication and sufficient time allocation that would constantly bring life to your koi ponds.
