Sharing with you my experience doing the 3 hotel management degree, and also some insights about the scope related to it

Few years back when people used to complete their 12th grade or their higher secondary, the only option that they thought of was doing engineering, becoming a doctor, joining the merchant navy, or just complete your normal graduation. But by late 90's people had become aware of many new courses which were made available to the students like mass media, journalism, BMM and along with it came the era of hotel management.

When I completed my 12th grade I was a confused soul, I had no clue what to do with my life and so did some search around to see what my friends are doing. I said to myself I will get into any field which my friends are going to join, so that will narrow my search and will also have company of my friends. so many of my friends were all set to give the entrance exams for hotel management and so was I. I got selected in one of the colleges, but the irony was my friends who were confident about getting in that college did not make through and I was left with no option as that was the only college where i had applied for, it was one of the best colleges in town. so I took admission there with much of regret.

But as I joined that college life was not all that bad, I made new friends and was all set for one of my first kitchen practicals. and the fact is I had never even held a knife before in my hand. so chopping an onion would easily take me around 10-15 minutes wherein it was just a matter of few minutes. but slowly some how I mastered the art of at least cutting and chopping it, not on time though but soon I became efficient enough.

People usually relate hotel management to only being a waiter or a chef but they fail to realize that it is hotel MANAGEMENT that we are doing and not just an ordinary course to become waiters and cooks. there is lots of scope in it and the third year of studies has almost 6 management subjects in it and we also have to do a research on any of the topics related to the hospitality and tourism industry which carries 100 marks. then during our second year we have an industrial training which we have to complete it from any renowned hotels across the country or even around the world that is if you have a jack or money to spend, most of them prefer the local hotels. I was luck enough to do my training in one of the 5-star deluxe hotel, initially it seemed like hell because of the work load but learnt a lot in bargain.

So all of you who are looking at doing Hotel Management I would say if you have the right passion to work, the hotel industry has a big pool of opportunities for you to swim in......
