Do you know how important domain names are really?

For those new to the art of web creation, building a website is best dealt with as a methodical process. Before I built my first website every idea attracted me and the haphazard manner in which I proceeded wasted my time to no end. Experience gave method to my madness though, and I found out that trying to find shortcuts to fame and money actually waste your time on the net. Go about things in a methodical manner and each step will pave the way for the next. The domain name, for instance is the first step in creating your website. It will be your internet address; the name by which your site will be known.

Consider the following thought pattern and analyze your goals. The analysis should lead you to the perfect domain name for your project.

  1. What is the purpose of your website? Your site’s domain name should be indicative of what you aim to provide, or what people are searching for when they visit you.

  2. Everyone wants free traffic to their sites and keywords play a huge role in getting more and more people to visit you on the web. Find the most used keywords for your niche and see if that keyword fits in your domain name. For instance, if you are making an informational site on aquariums a keyword pertaining to aquariums will be your target.

  3. When it comes to domain name extensions, the most valued are the dot com domain names because their easy retention value.

  4. For starters, you’d want your site to have everything. That’s a suicidal approach. Targeting a niche is so much easier and manageable, especially for a one man show. For instance, aquariums are a broad topic but a site pertaining to the topic will be that much harder to manage for a first timer. Targeting a niche within your area of interest should be the goal. With niche sites you are more likely to have a smaller clientele but they will actually be people interested in what you have to say or sell. They will not be visiting your site just to be disappointed because you could not cover the topic they were looking for.

This step by step process should help you pick the right domain name for your site and actually get started towards serious decision making. Just be sure that the idea is to keep things simple and trying overcoming the temptation to go in three different directions all at once.
