Is Starbuck's Low Fat Breakfast Sandwich better than the Egg McMuffin? Find out.

I've always been a fan of McDonald's Egg McMuffin. What I haven't always approved of is the fat and calorie content of these delicious, little breakfast sandwiches. Recently, while traveling through Atlanta, I had the chance to try Starbuck's low fat, turkey bacon, and cholesterol free egg breakfast sandwich. Did it compare favorably with the McDonald's Egg McMuffin?

I was quite excited to find this particular breakfast sandwich being offered by Starbucks as I'm a big fan of healthy replicas of unhealthy fast food. The Starbucks low fat breakfast sandwich seemed like a nice substitute for the less healthy McDonald's Egg McMuffin sandiwch. Instead of using canadian bacon, Starbucks has substituted turkey bacon which should be lower in fat. The whole egg used in the McDonald's Egg McMuffin has been replaced with a cholesterol free egg. Starbuck's breakfast sandwich is slightly more expensive at $2.95 than the McDonald's Egg McMuffin which costs $1.99. I don't mind paying more for healthy food, so this was certainly not a deterrent. I paid the $2.95 plus tax and sat down with my Starbuck' low fat turkey bacon breakfast sandwich. They really oughta give this sandwich a catchier name!

I enjoyed the first bite of my Starbuck's low fat breakfast sandwich. Although not a dead ringer for an Egg McMuffin, it was tasty, albeit a bit dry. It would probably be immensely improved by spreading on a little sugar free jelly or low fat mayonnaise. If you're accustomed to the Egg McMuffin which tends to be a bit greasy, you might find this sandwich to be a disappointment. I've trained myself to enjoy the taste of less fatty foods, so I found this sandwich to be quite tasty. In the event you find the sandwich a little dry, consider bringing along a few packets of sugar free jelly or low fat mayonnaise.

How about the all important nutritional information? After doing a little research, I found the low fat Starbucks breakfast sandwich has 330 calories and 7 grams of fat. What's surprising is the McDonald's Egg McMuffin actually has a
lower calorie value at 300 calories, but a higher fat content at 12 grams. If you're counting fat grams, the Starbucks sandwich is the clear winner. All in all, I think the low fat Starbucks breakfast sandwich is healthier due to the overall lower fat content. I'm a bit surprised the calorie content is so high though.

Would I purchase the low fat, turkey bacon, cholesterol free egg Starbucks breakfast sandwich again? Yes, I would if I happen to be in close proximity to a Starbucks and I didn't have time to make something healthy at home. I probably wouldn't go TOO far out of my way to get it though. If the choice came down to McDonald's Egg McMuffin and the low fat Starbuck's break fast sandiwch, I'd pick Starbucks every time.
