Undoubtedly, the most difficult part for every smoker who wishes to stop smoking is stopping the urge to smoke. How can anyone just stop from doing something he has been so used to doing for many years?

Changing something that has rooted so deeply in one’s life is so difficult that many ended up disappointed. Many are back to their smoking habit after trying to stop smoking. Some have become worst smokers after failing to stop. Certainly, you don’t want to be among those who fail miserably. Always renew your commitment to stop smoking. Always bear in mind the motivations which help you going. Always imagine the sweet taste of triumph when you will finally obliterate smoking from your life and how people will respect you for your self control and determination to create a major change in your life.

The moment the urge to smoke is building, be ready to suppress this in any way possible. Never nurse the thought of puffing a cigarette. Never dwell on the idea otherwise you are like inviting your enemy to come and defeat you. Avoid thinking how good a single cigarette will satisfy your longing because if you do you are likely to give in and reach for one stick. Just one stick of cigarette can lead you to reach for another one and so on. Before you know it, you have become a failure like many others who are too weak to face and eradicate their enemy and you will never be able to stop smoking.

Once the urge to smoke pops up in your mind, get rid of this. Counteract any thoughts of puffing a smoke whenever these come to mind. Suppress these thoughts by telling yourself that you are going to stop smoking and you are through smoking. Further tell yourself that you don’t ever need a cigarette and that the taste would be terrible. It will help a lot if you divert your mind to something else while the urge is mounting. Pop a gum or lifesaver into your mouth and quickly do it before you are too weak and tempted to grab a cigarette. Think about something else- a happy experience, the games you won, the wonderful and exciting dates you had- anything but a stick of cigarette. You will find diverting your thoughts to other more pleasant things helpful in suppressing your desire to smoke. If your thoughts are diverted, you will soon find that your desire to puff a cigarette has disappeared and another sweet victory in your part.

Additionally, you can resist the urge by reminding yourself why you are taking the pains to stop smoking. Think about your motivations. Some people write their motivations on a sheet of paper to constantly remind them about all these and increase their will to succeed. Read your motivations until the urge to smoke passes. Reward yourself with something you really desire after completing a week without a cigarette. Do this habitually so that every time the urge comes you will have to choose between getting the reward or fail miserably. For some people drinking a glass of water leisurely using a straw until the urge passes is often effective.

Finally, you can call a friend who supports your aspiration to stop smoking. Talk with your friend about anything until the urge to smoke is gone. If you are determined to stop smoking, resisting will be the hardest part and should be your top priority.
