Pigeons are widely kept as domestic birds or pets. You can almost find them anywhere else in the world, in the tropics or in the temperate regions. Through the years, scores of colorful and unique breed had been developed.

Archangel Pigeon

All angels are beautiful. The Archangel will not be named ‘archangel’ if it’s not beautiful. It is notable for the

metallic sheen of its feather. It is kept as an ornamental or fancy breed, valued for its unusual appearance.

Archangels are small, weighing about 12 oz. Its eyes are dark orange and may or may not be crested. The

body of the bird is bronze or gold with wings that are may be black, white or blue. It is also commonly called

Gimpel.

Zitterhalls or Stargard Shaker

The long-necked and pretty Zitterhalls, German for “trembling neck pigeon” also called Stargard Shaker, a fancy

breed of pigeon was originally developed in Pomerania. Zitterhals have curved swan-like necks that tremble or

shake in a way similar to Fantail pigeons. A Zitterhals pigeon was one of the champions at the 2007 NPA Grand

Nationals.

This fancy looking and beautiful pigeon is the Old Dutch Capuchine, a breed of fancy pigeon developed over

many years of selective breeding. Old Dutch Capuchines, along with other varieties of domesticated pigeons,

are all descendants from the Rock Pigeon.

Saxon Monk

One of the most elegant-looking breed of fancy pigeon is the Saxon Monk. The Saxon Monk comes in five colors

including Blue, black, red, yellow and silver with white bars or spangles. The Saxon Monk originated in Saxony.

Like the Saxon Monk, the Saxon Shield is another unique breed of fancy pigeon. It also comes in many colors

including Black, blue, red and yellow with white bars or spangles. In addition, blue with black bars or barless

and blue check or silver check had been developed.

Still, another unique breed of fancy pigeon that was developed with Saxon Monk and Saxon Shield from Saxony

is the Saxon Spot. This breed comes in four color varieties - black, blue, red and yellow.

Modena Pigeon

This pigeon that looks like a chicken is the Modena, a breed of fancy pigeon that comes in many different colors

in two main varieties, Gazzi and Schietti. Gazzi is a pied marking with the head and portion of the throat, the wings

and the tail colored and the rest of the bird being white. Schietti’s are non-pied. The breed is of Italian origin and

derives its name from the city of Modena where it was first bred centuries ago.

Indian Fantail

The magnificent and lovely Indian Fantail is found exclusively in India and was brought to the US in 1926. It

was from two lucky birds that the species of Indian fantail pigeons spread beyond Indian shores and reached

the farthest corners of the world.

Oriental Frill

The peculiar-looking Oriental Frill is originally a Turkish pigeon breed specially bred for the Ottoman Sultans in

the Manisa Palace, Turkey. It is called Hunkari: the bird of the Sultans in its homeland. The variety is divided into

several variations in color and markings with Blondinettes and Satinettes being the most common.

This weird-looking breed of fancy pigeon called Voorburg Shield Cropper is a breed that was developed by C.S.T.

Van Gink at Voorburg in Holland (now known as the Netherlands) in 1935.

Yellow Lahore Pigeon is one of the few brightly colored breed of fancy pigeon that was developed. It is from

Lahore in Pakistan.
