BASIC SURVIVAL TIPS

Basic survival skills for the great outdoors, what you might not think of can save your life.

The first thing you need to do before going outdoors, hiking or just a nature walk is to tell someone where you are going and when you will be back,  because if you go missing they will know where to start looking for you. Today everyone owns a cell phone. Walking with a cell phone would be a great idea, but if the batteries go dead or no reception a great backup plan would be to walk with a whistle. Blowing a whistle loud will let someone know where you are.

Dress properly for any weather situation. Wear long sleeves and pants and have a hooded jacket or rain jacket for rain. Avoid wearing any perfum and wear insect repellant to avoid any unwanted insects or animals. A great tip if you have no insect repellant is rubbing mud from the ground on body and face (this is also a great facial mask). Blanket is a great idea for warmth and shelter. It can also hold over you to avoid the rain.

Walk with water because you can only survive 2 days without water and up to 2 weeks without food. Hopefully you will be found quickly or find your way home. The most important thing is not to panic, stop and look around your surrounding. If you see a stream, follow it downstream and you will meet an urban area and there will be a phone to call someone or even better you find your way home.

Be safe and enjoy the outdoors
