A review on the Cadbury Twirl chocolate bar

On a recent trip to B+M I decided I was going to get my self a large stash of of chocolate bars, including:
Fudges (6 of), Curly Wurly's (5 of), Daim (4 of), Twirls (7 of), all for less than £5, which lets be honest, was wonderfully brilliant, gotta love the budget stores in this time of financial hardhsip.
This review in particular is for the Twirl's, that was 5 multipack bars with 2 free (so 7 bars), each is double fingered but shorter than the normal twirls (I think...or at least hope, as these look tiny).
Although they aren't particularly cheap when bought singularly, the multi-pack options as always is considerably cheaper, in fact, I think there were about £1.49, they were certainly not much than that anyway. Which means about 21.2ish P each. a bargain for a chocolate bar in this day and age. In fact about 10.5P a finger, it's no wonder that there wasn't many left on the shelf.

The bar was first released in the 1970's in just Ireland as a single bar similar in size to the flake before becoming a two fingered bar in the 1980's and being released to mainland UK in the 1990's. The bar is made by Cadbury's who personally I feel make better chocolate than the Mars owned Galaxay, which do a similar bar called the Galaxy Ripple. Though saying that, lets actually get on to the bar, which for those familiar with Flakes will be considerably familiar, just, less messy. The bar comes in a purple foil wrapper with large yellow print “Twirl” and the Cadbury logo.

The Twirl is for all purposes, a flake with a solid chocolate cover, which, in turn keeps the flakey bits inside and stops the regular waste of chocolate that we all know happens with the wonderful flakes. The almost legendary well known Cadbury taste is at the forefront when you put one of the fingers inside your mouth, long before you bite into the thin chocolate coat and notice the two tone texture, of solid chocolate and chocolate flake. If your like me and just want to shovel it down you gullet, you may miss some of the intricate details of the bar, the fact that the flake effectively melts in your mouth after breaking up when you break the coating in your mouth seemingly giving an even sweeter and more pleasing taste. The immediate comparisons to flake are obvious, yet despite the similarities the bars are different, the solid coating gives the bar a tougher feel, a more wonderful taste to be honest, the two different chocolate consistencies work brilliantly together to give your mouth a sensation of taste that's just brilliant.

Now some will prefer the Ripple, it does appear to be better, personally I'd rather have a Cadbury's rather than a Galaxy's bar, but I know some folk are different. So the taste is a personal thing, in regards to the chocolate type, the Galaxy bar seems to be softer in the mouth than the Cadbury, so this takes a little something away from the bar.

The ingredients are very simple:
Milk
Sugar
Cocoa Butter
Cocoa Mass
Vegetable Fat
Emulsifier and Flavourings

The 180 Calories per 2 finger pack is 180, which is quite excessive, but the bar is nice enough to deserve having as a treat every so often. Although not on the packaging, I have a strange feeling the bars are manufactured in a place where nuts may be used, so this may be a concern to some people.

The 7 bar multi-pack is 241g so each bar is around the 34g mark, meaning each finger is less than 20g. About 3 inches long by ½ an inch or so across and a lil bit shorter, so for those that like a filling bar, you won't really enjoy this fully, as it's a little on the short side, not like a filling Snickers, or Yorkie.

A tip for eating these is to NOT put them in the refrigerator, as the chocolate “flake” becomes more solid and the bar seems to lose a lot of its appeal. A better alternative is to leave them in a cool room, where the bar maintains it's uniqueness in it's multi-textured character.

A bar that despite being different and tasting nice, seems a little bit small and is a bit flawed in a “there's something different here, but I don't know what” type thing. The bars immediate rival is worth a try, but I feel the Galaxy chocolate is just a little bit too rich to eat much of.
