Are you cut out to be a Nanny?

The economy is tight, however prime employment, as a Nanny, can be a good position to consider now.

First hand experience of mine can direct you to becoming a Nanny if you have the character and resilence. Let's get started to see if you have both.

1.  An easy going temperment is needed to deal with children, especially other peoples offspring. The reason being a little different,  is the fact that children that are not blood or have not grown up around you, don't have a strong desire to fall into respecting you. You not only have to earn it like you do with your own children, you need to do it with ease. A mild, yet firm demeanor, will gain that respect quickly.

2.   Becoming a buddy to a toddler will serve you well as his Nanny. You will not only protect him from outside influences that can harm him, but you will be privvy to lots of information as his friend. Keep in mind that the line between a friend and a Nanny must stay very close and  side by side touching if possible. If they cannot, your first attention will be directed being his Nanny.

3.  Honesty is of utmost importance. The family that hires you to care for their child will depend on that trait. I found if I am honest, I can see honesty coming back to me also. You will be in charge of the most precious possession the family owns.

4.  Good hearing is beneficial as a Nanny. Excellent health is mandatory. Good personal hygiene is a must. An almost endless supply of energy for at least 8 hours is required. You will use these often. A willingness to do what is not in the contract might pop up every now and again for you to accept or deny. Babysitting other people's children that visit your charge, as a Nanny,  will be a usual event.

5.  Sometimes odd hours will be expected especially with an infant or ill child.

6.  Child/infant CPR certification along with Heimlich and other life saving techniques are necessary to become a Nanny. Recertification each renewal will be expected.

7.  Most often times a clean, current driver's license is needed.

8.  Any singing or musical instrument ability is an added plus to securing a job as a Nanny.

I've never seen this laid out before, but it's true. I''ve met tons of people who babysit children *simply* bc they have the time and the kids had pajamas on at 4:00 pm, were crying and hungry. If they'd take the time to read your article, maybe they'd see how poorly a job they're doing?

This is awesome info for becoming a nanny. Now that I have a child of my own, I'm sure I could do it. And funny, I just watched the movie Nanny McPhee last night. It's a must watch if you haven't seen it. Very, VERY good movie. Check it out! :-)

Very good advice. I did home day care for 5 years, but was not a nanny, but everything you said holds true for home day care providers too.
