"The Volturi aren't supposed to be the villains, the way they seem to you. They are the foundation of our peace and civilization." -Edward Cullen

The Volturi are an organized group of vampires in the Twilight series. They are the largest, oldestĀ and strongestĀ vampire coven, and enforce the unwritten laws of the vampire world. They reside secretly in Volterra, Italy.

The Volturi recruit vampires who have special, extra senses, like Edward's mind reading ability and Alice's visions of the future. Some of the members of their guard da have special abilities. Jane has the ability to inflicet physical pain onto others with her mind, and ger twin Alec, has the power to cut of people's senses (sight, smell, hearing, etc.). Chelsea has can manipulate people emotional bonds, and uses this strength to guarantee a new member's loyalty to the Volturi. Demetri has an extraordinary ability to track down specific people. Heidi, like Rosalie Hale, has amazing beauty. She uses her looks to lure groups of unsuspectig humans to the Volturi's lair for their blood. Renanta can repel people, she uses her power to be the leaders' body guard.

The Volturi are known as "nighttime patrons of the arts" and act as though they are royalty. They are not truly "royal" but other vampires revere them because of their immense influence over their world. The Voltui works to keep the world of vampires secret from all others. If there is a vampire who behaves recklessly amoung humans, or makes themselves known, they will have the vampire at fault destroyed.

The three leaders of the coven are Aro, Caius and Marcus. Aro has the gift to read every thought a human or vampire ever thought through touch, usually hand to hand. He is usually regarded as the top leader of the Volturi. Marcus has the ablility of sensing relationships between others. And Caius is the only leader who does not have an extra ability.
