Goth fashion has always been frowned upon by the general public, it's members carry the stigma of being 'depressed' and anti-social. This couldn't be further from the truth. Gothic fashion is a sign of creativity and individuality.

Psychologists have noted that youths who dress gothic tend to be more intelligent and artistic, and usually end up in creative or highly technical, high paying jobs.  When starting out as a goth it's very important to be yourself and take it gradually so as to not alienate your friends and family.  Gothic fashion has branched out into smaller sub-genres each with it's own take on 'traditional' gothic clothing.

The 80s/Heavy metal style of Goth fashion, characterised by heavy metal/deathrock music, leather and studs.  Generally speaking this can also be referred to as punk, with bondage style pants, spiked collars and chains.

The Victorian style of goth fashion is popular among goth girls this is characterised by gothic dresses, dress shoes and a very clean look.  Generally this is a more romantic style of goth fashion, with black corsets or tailored  velvet tops and period items and accessories.

The Gothic style of Japanese lolita is becoming quite popular due to the increased popularity of Anime.  It is characterised by black and white lace, knee length skirts and knee high boots or socks.  The aim is to imitate the look of porcelain dolls or children.  There are even sub-genres of this, with some using pastels and floral patterns.

Some general staples of gothic fashion are tight clothes, {dark} band shirts and of course high black boots {big heals are optional}.

The hair can be dyed or 'over styled', but this isn't a requirement for goth fashion.  Actually many goths keep their natural hair color.

Makeup on the other hand is quite dramatic with heavy eyeliner, dark red lips and dramatic colors.

Accessories vary with chokers, collars, lace gloves, bracelets and earings being quite popular.

When it comes to goth fashion it's almost always better to make or accessorize your goth clothes yourself.  Goth fashion is about expression and individuality and most 'elder' goths frown upon the commercial store bought gothic clothes out there.  Visit http://www.gothworld.info for more!

Being labeled is almost inevitable. But it doesn't matter as long as we feel good about ourselves with how we look and with what we are wearing. From the gothic style, to the more common hip hop clothing, everyone's got their own preferred look.

I am not goth but I am getting into the DIY clothing and love the goth looks for clothes I have found. I have an art degree and like being creative with clothes.
