I've always found one thing missing from the iPhone and iPod Touch. Notes don't get synced. However, this free service is a great solution! (and you can't beat the price!)

I've always found one thing missing from the iPhone and iPod Touch. Notes don't get synced.

If you have ever used a Palm OS device, you may remember the Memopad application. Anything written in the Memopad gets copied over to the Palm Desktop application on the user's computer. Similarly, anything written in the Palm Desktop application gets synced to the Palm.

This allows a user to write something on the fly and access it on his computer. For instance, he could start an article on his mobile device and finish it later when he gets to his computer.

This is functionality that is sorely needed on the iPhone and iPod Touch.

Apple's 3.0 iPhone OS provides this functionality in a limited capacity. However, there is a better option available for no charge now.

It's called Evernote.

Founded by Russian-American scientist Stepan Pachikov in 2004, Evernote is a database on which users can store text, pictures/images, audio, and web content on the go.

The great thing about Evernote is it can be accessed from any computer with Internet access via the Evernote website.

There is an app for the iPhone and iPod Touch as well as clients for Windows and Mac OS X available for download.

However, the website access makes

Content you create on the go gets synced with the Evernote server – making it available for any other platform with which you access Evernote. For example, if you write a note to yourself on your iPhone, it will be available to you on your desktop – even without connecting the phone to the computer.

Likewise, content created on your computer will be available on your phone.

This is the beauty of cloud computing.

Evernote is free to use. The iPhone / iPod Touch app is free – as are the clients available for download for Windows and Mac OS X.

The service itself is also free. There is a premium membership available for $5 per month or $45 per year. That gets you unlimited bandwidth. But the free membership gives you enough bandwidth for 20,000 notes every month. That's a LOT of writing. So, if you're just going to stick with notes (like me) you won't have a need for a premium account.

To get started you simply create an account on Evernote.com and use that account on your mobile device and on your desktop.

Of course you can use Evernote even if you don't have a mobile device. Maybe you just want to keep your data in sync across computers and operating systems. You can do that too.
