Romancing the Stone
A 1980's film by one of the known directors in showbiz industry, Robert Zemeckis. Adventure, romance, life, goal. Simply fantastic. Who can ever miss Romancing the Stone.
Joan Wilder (Kathleen Turner) a timid, creative, romance novel writer, lives a very simple life with her cat in an apartment. Receiving a package from Columbia, she has no clue that it will turn her mundane life into adventures that she only saw in paper. This package which was sent by her murdered brother-in-law contains a treasure map and is needed by her sister to ransom her out of the kidnappers. Thinking about her sister's safety, she sets forth to Columbia and finds her way off-coursed in the jungle almost getting killed by one of the seekers of the treasure map. Fortunately, a soldier of fortune, Jack T. Colton (Michael Douglas) comes to her aid and agrees to accompany Joan for some cash.
T in Jack's name supposedly stands for Trustworthy and Joan had to trust this stranger to save her sister's life. It was hard to trust esp after almost getting killed by the man she first trusted. Or maybe Joan is too gullible.
My favorite scenes:
- when they are cutting through the trees to escape from the bad guys and finds their way to a crashed airplane
- Kathleen and Jack's mud slide dropping down on brown thick puddle
- going over a waterfall in a compact car
- a romantic scene (like from Mr. and Mrs. Smith) where they danced in a solemn town and kissed (duh?!)
- Jack tries wall climbing to rescue the girl which is like 10meters from the ground
- Jack jumping to the waters to follow the alligator who swallowed the emerald
- Jack marches his dream boat (a huge one) in the city where Joan Wilder lives
Kathleen Turner is so hot! Her role suits her. Now, I know why Catherine Zeta fell for Michael Douglas. Danny DeVito's (Ralph) appearance in the movie is memorable since his character is a bit annoying for someone like me who doesn't like mean and sneaky people. This movie, Romancing the Stone, is one of the first movies I saw with my whole family, (in Betamax!) alongside The Sound of Music when I was 5 years old. Although there were bad guys who chases who, I think it is good for ages young and old since it is funny, adventurous, a little romantic, and oh! I love treasure hunting! But then, it's better for children to watch this film with adults. Even for a 1984 movie, you can line it up with movies like The National Treasure, Indiana Jones movies and The Mummy.
Directed by Robert Zemeckis (Back to the Future, Who Framed Roger Rabbit)
