Unified Instant Messaging for Your Mac
If you're into instant messaging on your Mac, check out this free alternative to iChat!
As the internet has grown so has internet messaging. Today there are many protocols and services via which users can communicate across the web via text, audio, video, or a combination of the three.
With the plethora of internet messaging services available, it can be difficult to keep track of them all.
You may have some friends using Google Talk, some on Yahoo!, some on AOL Instant Messenger, and others on more services.
So what are you to do if you want to keep in touch with all of your friends? You could download the client for each service, but that would be a pain.
A better solution is to download an internet messaging client that supports every protocol you want to use.
My favorite is Adium.
Adium supports the following services:

- Yahoo! Messenger
- Bonjour
- Gadu-Gadu
- ICQ
- LiveJournal
- Lotus Sametime
- MobileMe
- MySpace IM
- Novell GroupWise

Adium sports one of the most customizable internet messaging experiences available. Users can customize the look and feel of chat sessions, the buddy list, and even the dock icon.
Unlike iChat, Adium allows users to display buddies from each of the messaging services in a single list or in separate windows.
You can also download a plug in pack for Adium (called Adium Xtras) that further expands the capabilities of this free software.
Unfortunately, Adium only supports Apple's Mac OS X. So, Windows and Linux users are out of luck.
