Doctors usually prefer women to get off birth control if they are over 35 years old and a smoker or have high blood pressure. But if you are a healthy woman, is there an age cut off?

Millions of women take an oral contraceptive form of birth control, known simply as The Pill. It offers women the convenience of taking one pill a day and not having to worry about birth control for the rest of the month. However, how safe is for women over age 35?

Doctors used to suggest that women who were over the age of 35 years old could no longer take the Pill. Years ago, there were only high dose hormone pills, now there are low dose pills that have fewer hormones. These pills are safer for women and allow women to stay on the pill for years longer. The majority of women are staying on the pill until they are in their late forties.

Women who would be discouraged from continuing to take the Pill are women who in addition to being age 35 are smokers, are at risk for blood clots, high blood pressure, heart attacks or cancer. If you are a healthy women who is 35 or older and without any significant health issues, the Pill may still be your preferred method of birth control.

The Pill’s benefits are shorter periods, decrease in PMS symptoms, improved bone density and prevention of ovarian cysts. According to the World Health Organization, the benefits of the Pill in healthy women far outweigh the risks.

By the time a woman turns 50, doctors recommend that women use another form of birth control as doctors think the Pill masks the symptoms of menopause. In addition, a woman’s risk of developing a stroke and other cardiovascular diseases increases after age 50. When deciding if the Pill is right for you, talk with your health care professional to go over your options.

Interesting info. Many people take birth control without knowing when to stop or what side effects it may cause.
