* exercise at least three times each week
* lose weight if you are overweight
* avoid frying your food and start to grill this food
* use olive oil when you prepare your food
* be careful if you go dining out; choose for restaurants which serves low cholesterol dishes
* avoid fast food
* drink plenty of water
However, these tips will certainly help to reduce your level of cholesterol; there are situations where you need to take some medicines, for example crestor, lipitor, zocor etc. or he can suggest an intake of extra vitamin B3 (Niacin). It is necessary to consult your doctor before you take medicines and for most of them you need always a prescription. This is often necessary when you can't lower your cholesterol level until the desired level because of genetic factors.
If your body makes more cholesterol than you need a healthy diet and exercise will help but may not sufficient and your doctor needs to prescribe the necessary medicines. There are also herbs which can help to reduce your level of cholesterol, for example garlic, alfalfa herb, psyllium, red yeast rice, licorice root etc.
