How to Use Auto Tune to Sound Like T-Pain

Ever wonder how popular artists like T-pain, Daft Punk, Kid Rock and others make their voice sound robotic and hit only certain notes? It is called auto tuning. With a few simple audio tools, you can produce auto tune effects of your own.

Step 1

Open your audio editor. If you need a free editor, Audacity, Wavepad and Waveosaur are popular.

Step 2

Go under effects and select VST effects. Depending on your editor this might be under a menu other than effects.

Step 3

Browse for the folder containing the Auto tune .dll file and select it. This folder will probably be under the C drive in program files in the Antares auto tune folder.

Step 4

Click on settings to open the auto tuner interface. You can use auto tune by Antares Audio, but it costs money to buy. There are some free auto tune plug ins like Gsnap that can be downloaded online.

Step 5

Use the following settings: scale= major, retune speed=0, everything under vibrato set to the lowest setting, pitch=0, and amplitude and formant amount set to max. Finally, set pitch tracking (might be under an options menu) toward relaxed, between 70 and 90. This will help people with bad singing voices more.

Step 6
Select a clip of vocal audio and apply the VST to it. The clip will be altered with a T-Pain like auto tune effect.

Even with auto tune, you still have to sing to get results, and good singing will result in a better sound. Auto tune will not make someone with no musical talent sound as good as T-Pain. It will take some practice to get your voice to sound the way you want to with Auto Tune. The settings provided here are just suggestions--a starting point from which you can make your own tweaks to get the right sound for you voice.

Thanks, I've been wondering how to do that!
