Stress Management and Relaxation

How can you deal with the stress of everyday life? Find out more!

This world is an incredibly stressful environment. Most of us have several things to worry about at any given time: money, school, work, friendships, relationships, and family, just to name a few. We live our lives in constant fear of failing, and this fear puts pressure on us, which in turn stresses us out, sometimes to the point of a complete mental breakdown. It is of paramount importance that you're able to manage your stress effectively and relax. If you can't do that, then you may end up losing everything that you feared you would lose in the first place.

Exercise is a great way to manage your stress. Put yourself in some good shoes, get down to the gym, and start working out. If you burn calories, you will release endorphins throughout your body, endorphins make you happy, and, to quote Reese Witherspoon, "happy people don't shoot their husbands." The point is, if you exercise, you can actually make yourself happier, which is synonymous for being less stressed out. You can work off your stress by burning excess energy in the gym, going for a long run, or even taking your bike out for a bit. Take control of your stress by exercising.

Another effective way to relieve yourself of your stress is to write. No, I am not stressed out at the moment (thankfully!), but whenever I do get stressed out, I work out and then write for a while. Put your thoughts on paper or into the computer, and you can feel them leave your head; you can get stressed simply by trying to juggle too many things in your head at once, so get them out as soon as possible. Additionally, you can give your memory a break just by writing down everything, such as your kids' sports schedule or a grocery shopping list. The pen is indeed a mighty tool in the battle against stress.

Sometimes, though, there is no "quick fix" for your stress. Sometimes, you need to just sit back and relax. After all, the universe has a way of solving itself when you leave it alone (only sometimes; the other 50% of the time you need to take action), so why not take an afternoon to sit on your bed and read? Just don't read anything about current events; it would be too depressing. Instead, pick up a favorite book of yours and read it again. This can make you simply forget about your troubles for a while because you'll be too immersed in your book to care about what's going on in your life. And, as much as I avoid watching television whenever possible, that's not such a bad option either if you're just trying to relax.

Don't beat yourself up. Even if it is your fault that you're so stressed out, beating yourself up for it isn't going to solve anything. If you have to manage stress that you put on yourself, the best thing you can do is confront it head-on. If you're behind on school work and stressed out because of it, get your work done and turn it in to your teacher with your sincere apologies. If you're trying to manage your household affairs and your job, sleep a little less for a week, or however long it takes to get back on track. Instead of saying "why did I do that?" you should ask yourself, "what can I do to fix it?"

Take a deep breath and try to slow yourself down. Working at a fast pace is often associated with stress. Breathe, slow things down, and stop moving for a while. Giving yourself a break is sometimes the best way to manage your stress. You don't want to keep working until you completely crash and burn, do you? The world moves pretty quickly, so you won't have much time to slow things down; but those precious, slow, relaxing moments could give you the strength and rest you need to move forward.
