Rooster Decoration Ideas for the Kitchen

May 13th, 2009 by Lisa Russell

Using roosters as a decorating theme can make your kitchen whimsical and fun. The color palette of decorative roosters has changed over the years, with earlier roosters having warm golden and beige tones, and modern roosters boasting a more vibrant design, with black, white, red and green color combinations.

Roosters in the Kitchen

Roosters are popular in the kitchen because so many foods come from chickens. We eat their eggs and their meat. Keeping chickens is entertaining, as well.

Rooster Decor Items

Rooster cookie jars are popular, so are rooster linens, rooster wallpaper borders, curtains, clocks, dishes, bakeware, cabinet decals, drawer pulls, and even backsplash tiles.

Rooster Kitchen Timer

A popular rooster kitchen item, especially during the holidays, is a kitchen timer that emits a rooster's famous cock-a-doodle-doo wake-up call.

Rooster Wallpaper

One of the quickest ways to start a rooster kitchen transformation is by adding a wallpaper border. Since roosters are such a popular pattern, these should be easy to find in your local linen or home decor store, as well as through online vendors.

Fun Fact

In the kitchen of Harry Truman's childhood home in Independence, Missouri, the red rooster seat cushions are still on the chairs.

    Rooster Color Palettes

Rooster colors range from the red-black-and beige to deep shades of rust, forest green and deep brown. To choose your best rooster colors, look at the color of your cabinets. If they're white, then the black and red colors will compliment them very nicely. If you have wood-toned cabinetry, then stick with the beige, rust and forest green colors.

    Rooster Feathers

If you happen to have roosters, you can bring their feathers into the paint shop and have the paint custom blended to match the rooster's colors. Photos of your rooster can be framed and hung in your kitchen. You can also scan and digitally alter your rooster pictures to create artsy, enlarged, or comedic images of roosters to compliment your decor.

    Rooster Cookie Jars

Rooster cookie jars, canisters and kitchen towels are easy to find. Since roosters have been popular for several years, you may find it easy to pick up second hand rooster decor for a much lower price than brand new rooster items. Buy pieces little by little, and gradually build up your collection, picking up new pieces a few times a month instead of on one spending spree.

    Rooster Linens

Roosters have been emblazoned on kitchen towels, washcloths, potholders, cloth napkins and tablecloths. You can also get rooster window valances and curtains. You can make your own rooster linens by printing pictures of roosters on inkjet fabric transfer paper, then following the manufacturer's instructions to iron the pictures onto your fabric. You can make a cute pattern by lining up feathers of different colors, scanning them into your computer and then printing them out to transfer.

Choosing a rooster decorating theme for your kitchen is fun and rooster items are easy to find. Before you know it, friends and family will be sending you roosters and bringing you roosters every time they see one. Have fun.
