Ferrets are different from what rodents are, they could be similar to how rodents look, but ferrets are somewhat bigger than some rodents.


If you think ferrets would resemble rodents, then you are mistaken. Ferrets are part of weasel family.

Moreover, you can keep ferrets as pets, a sharp contrast from what you can’t do with rodents.

If you go deep into history, ferrets had been kept as pets during the time of pharaoh. The historians had found inscription of creatures on Egyptian tombs that resembled ferrets.

The best way to understand the characteristics of the ferret is to keep one of those mammals as pets.

The ferrets fall under the category of carnivorous animals. They are very fond of meats. They are said to eat foods that even cat likes. That’s the reason probably, why they are called kittens in few places. But ferrets are different.

A full grown up ferret weigh, a little less than 5 pounds. At the time of birth, all ferrets have white hair. But as they grow some ferrets turn gray, while the rest remain white.

You need to understand why some ferret’s hairs turn gray.

Ferrets falls under two distinct types. The first one which is known as Albino remains white; while the second type of ferrets that is called Sable turns gray, even before they are 2 weeks old.

These Sable ferrets look somewhat like polecats. The Sable ferrets do have black colored legs and tail. Their eyes are covered with a dark shade of pulp, which beautifies the look of Sable ferrets.

Ferrets, whether they are Albino, or Sable have a foul smell at times. The reason for their peculiar scent which emanates from their body is the natural oil which ferrets secretes.

Did you ever saw a male ferret? A male ferret is a bit larger than the female one; it’s about less than 20 inches. Ferrets have a tendency to play with toys, and it has been seen that ferrets hide their toys with which they play. They even hide their food.

Nobody knows why they do it, may be to save foods for the winter, just what ants do.

Ferrets gather foods that have high input of proteins and fat. The high content of proteins and fats is a must for a ferret, as it helps them stay healthy.

The normal life span of a ferret is approximately 7-8 years provided they do not get affected by diseases. They may live a bit longer if they are treated well enough.

Ferrets are one of those affectionate breed of mammals that is perfectly suited to live in your homes.
