There are around 200 million rats in the United States alone. Rats can be a severe problem for homeowners. Rats have plagued mankind since prehistoric times and have been linked with infectious illnesses resulting to deaths of millions. It can transmit as many as 35 types of diseases that can infect both humans and livestock. Rats can adapt to their environment and can have children quickly. One pair of rats can generate 15,000 descendants in a year. This characteristic allowed it to survive over the centuries.
In other countries, rats are not considered pests but are being patronized as a protein-rich delicacy. Eating rat meat is considered as stigma but it is becoming popular in nations like Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, China, India and other parts of Asia. Consumption of this meat is common among the poorer section of society but it is starting to catch the attention of even the affluent part of the populace.

Rat meat is considered as cheap meat and has a resemblance with chicken meat with regard to taste. Rat meats can be poached, fried, grilled or baked. It is also believed that some manufacturers in the aforementioned countries are using rat meat as extenders for canned meat products like meat loafs and luncheon meats
