A few quotes on George Best - one of the best Manchester United Football Club has ever produced.

Pele good, Maradona better, George best.

This is the way, George Best is compared till date.

George Best had just 9 years to his credit for Manchester United, but these 9 years made a hell of a difference to both Best and United. He took an early exit from United at the age of 26 as soon as Matt Busby retired as a manager for United.

Lets see what Legneds had to say about him:

  • Bob Bishop, on seeing George play, he knew he had discovered something special and immediately sent a telegram to Manchester United's then manager, Matt Busby. The telegram simply read:    "I've found you a Genius"
  • George turned professional in 1963 and made his Manchester United debut against West Bromwich Albion. At a young age of 17 he ran his experienced Welsh opponent Graham Williams ragged. It is said that, after the match, Williams shooked George's hand and delivered the line "Stand still son so I can have a look at your face. I've been looking at your backside all day disappearing up the touchline."
  • In 1964, George, in a match against Wales, shared a room with a renowned goalkeeper Pat Jennings. The pair couldn't have been more different in status but what they did have in common was the ability to make the game look easy. Pat Jennings referring to George in later years, said, "He was the finest player I ever played with or against. I treasure my memories with himeven though on ocassions he made me look rather foolish."

George Best took up alcohol habitually and wrecked his rapport. This is when he gave up football in the UK. He later went to US which proved to be productive for both George and the clubs there. Later when he came back to England, he was abused and beer cans were thrown at him. George simply took a can and had a sip; the crowd burst out laughing.

He under went a liver transplant which gave a new hope for a short successful life. Personal problems drove him to alcohol again and he could not revive from it.

Best had earlier said: "When I'm gone people will forget all the rubbish and all that will be remembered will be the football. That'll do for me."

We do remember him as BEST.
