Different types of summer jobs and how to find summer jobs for college students.

One of the best ways to keep on top of the college debt is to get a job.  A weekly income will work wonders both on keeping your college debt down, and providing the student with a bit of extra spending money if necessary.  Some college students are unable to maintain jobs during the school year due to the pressures of performing well in school, and other obligations related to sports or the student's chosen major.  The summer however, is when students are usually off of school for a few months - making it the perfect time to work a lot and stockpile the cash for the fall semester.

As the university school year draws to a close in the middle of this coming may, now is the right time to be looking for the summer job.  Finding a good summer job is not easy.  While you may want to make as much money as possible, you also want to gain good and practical experience to add to your resume - which will make you a more lucrative employee following graduation.  The good thing is that these situations do not have to be mutually exclusive.  You can make money doing a job that will provide you with good resume worthy experience.  First, lets take a look at how you can find a good job.

The best way to find a job in times of recession is by going through the network that you have established, and seeing who knows who - and who needs help.  The majority of hires these days get hired because they know someone who has referred them.  It is important to always be in networking mode, because you never know when a new opportunity may present itself.  You may also want to return to your previous job if the opportunity still exists with the employer.  A simple explanation to the manager about your major and what you want to do for a career may ultimately result in a more focused position that will prepare you for a future career.  If all of that fails, it is time to beat the bricks and not be picky.  At this point, a job is a job is a job - and you need one.  Do all that you can to ensure that you get the best job possible out of the options that you are left with.

As for the resume side of things, resumes are all about spin and wording.  It is important to be honest, however being skillful with words and vocabulary is certainly a plus.  If you are a shelf-stocker, you may want to put down that you possess analytical skills in inventory management.  BAM!  A seemingly dull position just added another layer of luster and shine to your resume.

As you work your summer job, remember that it is not just about the money it is providing you with currently.  The skills and principles learned withing the job should prove helpful, and no doubt can make a difference in the salary that you receive in the future as well.
