Honey from local bees can help you to prevent and tame seasonal allergies.

I am sure you have seen signs advertising local honey.  What is the big deal about local honey and how can it help your seasonal allergies (also known as hay fever)? Here are some of the basic facts that may help some of the approximately 36 million allergies sufferers nationwide.

When local honey bees collect pollen from plants and flowers, they transfer a small amount into the honey.  The bees have gathered pollen from the same plants that create problems for those experiencing seasonal allergies.  That is the reason for obtaining honey from local bees.  The closer the better.  The best honey for treating your allergies comes from within a few miles. However, if you purchase local honey within your state, it shoud be helpful.  You do not want to purchase honey from California if you are suffering from allergies in Texas.

Small doses of the allergens that cause allergy symptoms are transferred to the honey. This can act as an immune system builder as your body builds resistance to your allergy triggers. Taking repeated small doses of local honey is much cheaper than a program of allergy shots. The honey should not create allergy symptoms in the consumer since the level of consumption is so low.  All that  is recommended is 2-3 teaspoons of the local honey a day for several months before your typical allergy season starts.

Honey is not recommended for infants and newborns under 1 year of age.  Contact your doctor before starting any new allergy program for children and adults.
