A recipe to mix up a well balanced diet for your rats

Any rat owner can tell you that the poor little rodents can get sick quite easily. You can help avoid this by making sure they are eating properly. This recipe is the perfect mix for rat food- it contains all the vitamins and minerals that rats need and is quite cheap to buy in bulk!

Ingredients:

Alfa Herbal deluxe food

Burns Dog Food

Pasta

Low sugar low salt cereal

Rice cakes.

The recipe couldn’t be simpler. You just need to mix all these together! Of course the trick is getting the proportions right. Domestic rats are very delicate creatures and not having these in the proper balance could cause them some health problems, so be careful. Here are the ratios:

50% of the total mix should e Alfa Herbal Deluxe Food. This is normally sold as rabbit food and can come in various sizes from small 1KG bags up to massive sacks which can last for months. If you have the space, these can save you a fortune!

Dried Dog Food should account for about 30-40% of the rat food mixture. Dried dog food is the best for this recipe, but if you want to use moist dog food (and don’t mind getting your hands dirty), you can. Dried Dog food works just as well though, and it’s far easier to gauge the content.

I use this brand.

The remaining 10-20% of the food should be made up of:

  • Pasta. Leave it uncooked, but be warned that some rats love to turn this food into a musical instrument and can keep you up all night!
  • Cereal. This should be low in salt and low in sugar. Shredded wheat is a very good choice, as it is made of almost nothing but wheat and so perfectly safe.
  • A few broken up rice cakes. These provide lots of basic nutrition and will help ensure your rats get everything they need.

If you’re just starting the rats on this food, then remember to mix a little of their old food in to help keep them comfortable, rats are after all very emotional animals, and I don’t know about yours but mine don’t like surprises, at least not where food is concerned!
