How to bathe a pet ferret

Bathing Ferrets are an important aspect of nurturing them. It's important to bath ferrets properly.


Ferrets are one of those animals that are quite sensitive to handle. Too much time on water doesn’t suit ferrets, and therefore you need to exercise lot of caution when you bathe ferrets.

It is important then for the owners to gain sufficient knowledge about ferrets before they decide to bathe their pet.

Though you have specialized ferret soap and shampoo, still you are advised to follow what your veterinary specialist says.

What are the important steps should you remember while you bath your pet ferret?

Ferrets at times smell a lot. And the odor is just not that good, owners probably think that the stink comes out of ferret’s dirt, and they bathe their pets every time their pet ferret stinks.

If you bathe ferret a lot then the hair or the fur coat rubs off, creating more stink after sometime.

You need to take a lot of precaution while you bathe your pet. Following proper ways to bathe ferret would keep your ferret healthy.

  • Ferrets secrete natural oil from their bodies, and those oils have a peculiar smell, which could make you think that your pet ferret is dirty. May be that’s not the case, the bad odor had come out of the natural oils. If you think, bathing your pet would remove that stinky odor then you are mistaken. Do not bathe your pet ferret just because it smells.
  • Bathe your ferret twice a month, if you stay in a hot region. As bathing regularly would help your pet ferret avoid dehydration.
  • Never use your own bath tub to bathe your pet ferret. Buy a separate bathtub. Fill the bath tub with Luke warm water. Do not heat the water much; otherwise, your pet ferret would lose hair out of her body.
  • Always use a shampoo that would drive fleas away from ferret’s body.
  • Fill the bath tub with water till the water covers some part of the body. Pour shampoo on her body; rub gently with your hands. Do not keep her in the water for too long. As staying in water for too long might make your ferret ill.
  • Avoid using brush to rub your pet ferret’s body. Usage of brush would remove hair from her body.
  • Never use soap or shampoo, on the eyes and the ears. If water somehow goes inside the ears, it would form ulcer inside the ears of your ferret.
  • Rub gently and wash her inside the tub once. Throw water out of the bath tub. Open the tap and again wash her body completely. Use your hands to remove remaining lather from her body.
  • Keep a separate towel for your pet ferret. Put the dry towel around the ferret and slowly rub off the water from her body.

If you follow bathing instructions, you would help your pet ferret to stay healthier and live longer.
