How to install computer memory to increase performance
This article will help you increase computer speed for little cost.
This article will provide you with a cost-effective way to increase your computer’s performance by buying RAM and installing it yourself.
First, go to crucial.com and click on the “scan my computer” button. The next page will ask you to agree to the terms and conditions; check the box, and click next. The following page will prompt you to install an add-on. When the small bar appears at the top of the page, right click it, and install the Active-X control. Next, the website will scan your system; this will take about 20 seconds. The next page will tell about your current configuration. Notice the type of RAM. For example, it may read something like DDR PC 3200, SODIMM, or SDRAM. There are many types of RAM, and it is important to know which type your computer has when you purchase the additional RAM.
Now that you know what type of RAM your system currently has, you can pick RAM off of crucial.com or take your memory type and purchase from another site. RAM should only cost around $15 for 256 MB of memory, $25 for 512 MB, or $50 for 1 GB. Now you can sit back and wait for the RAM to arrive. Don’t get too comfortable; the hard part is coming up.
Now that your new RAM is here, we can go to the computer and turn it on its side. You might want to unplug the power cord first. For this step, we will need a Phillips-head screw driver or possibly a star driver depending on your computer. Unscrew the two screws on the back of the case; only one side comes off, so make sure you are working on the side that contains the lid. Once the cover is removed, quickly scan the inside of the case to locate the memory slots. You should find one stick of memory and one or more empty slots next to it. Make sure and touch the metal sides of the case before putting your hands inside; this will prevent electrostatic discharge which can severely damage your motherboard and components. When holding the RAM, hold it on its side edges and be gentle with the contacts. You will notice a slit in the bottom of the RAM. Line this up with the slot before inserting. If you aren’t careful, you could damage your RAM. If you are having trouble lining it up, line it up with the other stick that is in the other slot. When inserting press down on top corners simultaneously, and once it is inserted, gently press in the side clamps, reinstall the cover screws, and you’re done! You can now fire up your PC and enjoy your new found performance that only cost you $15 to $80!
