Lighting an Advent wreath is a holiday tradition that can help families remember the true meaning of Christmas.

An Advent wreath is an evergreen wreath that holds four candles.  The candles are lit on the four Sundays of Advent.  The tradition of the Advent wreath is most often observed by Catholic Christians, but is suitable for Christians of any denomination.  Lighting an Advent wreath is a wonderful way for families to call to mind the true meaning of Christmas.

Advent wreaths can be purchased online or at religious supply stores.  It's also quite simple to make your own.  You can use any color of candles that you choose, or you can use the traditional colors of three violet candles, and one rose-colored candle.  These traditional colors symbolize the liturgical colors of the season.  The violet candles represent repentance and remorse, since historically the time leading up to Christmas was penitent in nature.  The rose candle that is lit on the final Sunday of Advent represents joy at the birth of the coming Savior.

Families often light the candles each Sunday at dinnertime.  Suggested prayers to say upon lighting the candles can be found here.  Keep in mind that you don't have to pray from a text, but many families find that liturgical prayer adds to the richness of the celebration.  On the first Sunday, light one violet candle.  On the second Sunday, light two violet candles, and so on.  By the fourth Sunday, all of the candles will be lit, including the final rose colored candle signifying Christ's birth.

In addition to creating a special holiday tradition for your family, the Advent wreath is rich with symbolism.  The evergreen wreath represents the eternal life to which we now have access through Christ's entry into the world, and the candlelight reminds us that the Savior whose birth we celebrate is the light of the world.
