Skipping Christmas, Is it possible?

Is skipping Christmas really possible? After watching a great movie about just this very thing last night, I had to wonder if it is even possible for someone to pull it off after being so involved in the past.

I have been saying for the last month that I was skipping Christmas this year. "Yea right, like that will ever happen" my husband said. After seeing the movie Christmas with the Kranks last night, I realized that for me it is not possible. I mean I have already purchased most of the Christmas presents already. They may not be wrapped, but I have them.

I suppose if you do not decorate, shop, buy, give, wrap and enjoy the whole season it would be easy to just say no. Many give gifts even though they may celebrate different than I, but they do it non the less. Personally I have tried to skip several years now only to end up doing more than the year before.

Could it be that being able to give to others is such an intoxicating emotion one almost becomes addicted? Maybe so, but I can think of worse things to be hooked on. The smell, sights, sounds, laughter, tears, trees, decorations, music and family makes my year seem not so bleak. To give this all up just makes me wonder what in the world I was thinking.

Will I ever be not able to give? Maybe, with this bad economy, you can count on many not being able to spend what they used to on the Holiday season. My family and I will decorate, have family meals, shop for bargains, wrap and spend family time doing all the above, along with singing the favorite Christmas Carols of all time. Skipping Christmas is just not for me this year or any year to come.

(Another message) Though I do have to agree with cadence as I scroll down and look at her comment; we can also change the holidays to see our needs and better fit, without emptying our wallets. To the holidays! (and full wallets! :D) -Fresh Writing

Hello Brandbla8, This is an interesting article where you bring up many accurate points--it is too for me difficult to give up Christmas. The dilemma between making up for a shoddy year and conserving otherwise spend money is a harsh one; one that many of us will have to deal with in this current economy. See you around! -Fresh Writing

Changing Christmas would be perfect. I hope to stick to it this year and buy less.

I think rather than skipping the holidays, we can change the holidays. Cut back on gifts, make the holidays more about family, and avoid a lot of the materialism. Unfortunately, the holidays as they are now are such a part of our culture - but we can make them more about family and less about materials if we want to.
