Basset sometime act as if they forget the training when a reward is not present. Basset should be on a leash when out on walks. They do tend to follow their nose and run off after a scent.

Basset might howl or bark when they want something or to suggest that they think something is wrong. They have a low, murmuring whine. They do this to beg for attention. They sometimes sound as if they are talking. Because a basset has extremely long ears they are prone to ear disease. If their ears dangle on the ground or in food on a daily basis they may develop chronic or fatal ear diseases.

Patient training is the most effective form of training a basset hound. Owners need to make the training process entertaining to allow the Basset to learn more efficiently.

Always consult a vet if your basset is sick and keep a good check on the color of their gums. They tend to get low iron counts and they gums become pale. Cheap mac and cheese helps with this on a short term basis. ALWAYS GET YOUR HOUND A 6MONTH CHECKUP and keep him/her up to date on shots and heart worm meds.
