How good is tofu to us, and what is the effects to our health? Read and find out!

For the last decade or so, we are encouraged to incorporate more soy into our daily intake, especially if we are not meat eaters. Soy becomes an important supplement in our dietary. We see more tofu, soy milk, and soy products in our supermarket now, so here is a look on the pros and cons of soy.

The Good Things about Soy

There are many health benefits from soy, and it is recommended that we should consume more of this product.  Below are some highlights of soy.

• High quality protein

• Low in artery-clogging fat

• Rich in iron, zinc, and some calcium

• Soy protein may moderately lower cholesterol

• Soy isoflavones may reduce bone mineral loss

• Whole soy may help with symptoms of menopause

Side Effects of Soy

Who would have thought that soy has side effects on health?  I have always heard good things about soy, not the side effects.  Below are some serious points to remember if you are a soy lover or pass on to someone who loves soy.

• Increase the risk of breast cancer for those who are at risk

• Interfere with thyroid function by reducing the absorption of thyroid medications

If you have breast cancer, or at risk of having cancer and you are taking thyroid medication, talk to your doctor before making the change. Otherwise, try adding more whole soy foods to your daily intake!

Thanks for breaking down the pros and cons of soy. I’m not a fan of much tofu, but it’s good to know it’s available as an alternative protein.
