Looking at the labels of various drink products available, you may wonder why choosing diet soda isn't a good choice. While it contains zero calories, diet soda isn't a great choice for someone trying to lose weight. How exactly is does diet soda make you gain weight though?

Water is the obvious drink choice for those looking to lose weight, but there are times you want something other than water to quench your thirst. Looking at the labels of other drinks available, you would think that diet soda is a wise choice. Even sports drinks and juice are filled with calories that a dieter may not want to consume. However, you would be amazed to know that drinking diet soda can actually make you gain weight.

Problems with self regulation are probably why the majority of Americans are obese. The amount of food consumed on a daily basis plays a huge role in whether you lose or gain weight. Drinking diet soda makes it harder to control your portions. Studies show that products made with artifical sweeteners like diet soda, make you have more cravings. Artifical sweeteners used in diet soda, among other no calorie products will make you hungrier than you would be if you allowed yourself to drink one regular soda. While you may not want the calorie intake you would get from drinking a regular soda, those who opt for a diet soda are more likely to devour more food. Therefore, can easily accumulate a larger calorie intake throughout the course of the day.

Knowing this should you give up diet soda? Choosing a diet drink is not always a bad decision. For dieters who count calories religiously, a diet soda isn't a bad option. However, if you are the dieter who simply watches what they eat and basis their decisions solely on portion control, you may want to make another choice. Relaxed dieters are more likely to binge and you don't want your choice of diet soda to have an adverse effect on your diet later.
