This little spider went to the Web . . this little spider grabbed keywords.

If you read my first article, What are Keywords? you now understand that keywords are the words or search terms people type into the query box to carry out a Web search. You are now ready to take your understanding to the next level. In this article I will discuss how search engines find keywords.

As a writer, you know it is important for your articles to appear in search engine results but . . . how the heck do you get them there? In simple terms, your article has to include relevant keywords.

Using Keywords That Are Found by Search Engines

The words you choose directly influence the pages that will be displayed to searchers.

To understand how keywords are found by the search engines, it helps to keep three things in mind: spiders, indexes, and queries.

How Search Engines Find Keywords

  • Spiders crawl the Web looking for pages to add to the indexes. Spiders grab URL's, text and links.
  • Indexes catch what spiders throw at them and use algorithms to analyze and sort out the information, assigning scores so that the engines can judge page importance.
  • When someone types in keywords in a search box, the search engine tries to match those words with the best pages on the subject.

When you are creating an article, you want to make sure that the keywords you use throughout your article are words that catch spider attention, are indexed, and return results so that your page climbs to the top and is easily found by searchers.

Understanding the process of how search engines find keywords helps when writing online articles. Good use of keywords means more traffic and greater earnings. In a future article, I will address tools that help you to choose good keywords.
