Examining what keywords are and why you should be using them.

What are Keywords? Why should you be using them?

If you are writing online articles, you should be using keywords. Why?

Keywords could be likened to the lifeblood of your online articles, running quietly in the background and propelling a flow of traffic. You've worked hard to create articles you hope people will read. It only makes sense to use keywords so that search engines display and people find your published content.

What Are Keywords?

  • Keywords are the words people type into their browsers when they are looking for information about a given subject.
  • Search engines return results based on a process that involves keywords.
  • Keywords are important to page relevance.

When trying to choose keywords for your articles, try to determine what someone would type into their browser. For example, if your article is about lung cancer, what search query do you think Internet searchers would use? It should be obvious that "lung cancer" would be a good bet or "cancer of the lung." Simply typing "cancer" would not necessarily point readers to a page about lung cancer.

Understanding what keywords are isn't difficult if your remember to think like a searcher who is looking for specific information.

This article, What Are Keywords, starts off a series of articles about keywords. I will be discussing keywords in future articles and how you can use them to best advantage.

A good rule of thumb is for a 400-word article, try for about 10 keywords.

Someone said that for every 400 words, your keyword should appear every 40 words. That would mean about 10 keywords for a 400-word article.

Totally agree with you. Keywords are the lifeblood of your online articles. If content is king, keywords are the pawns that will drive the search engine to your articles.
