There some states that it is illegal to pump your own gas. One day you might find yourself driving to another state where you will have to do this.

If you've never pumped gas before, it can be a tough task. Below are the steps that will get you through the gas pumping process successfully.

The best advice that can be given is to read the directions at the gas station. Don't be afraid to ask for help! It's better to ask for help and pump gas correctly, rather than doing it wrong, which can waste money and time.

Some gas stations require that you prepay inside or at the actual pump with a credit card. And, in some places you can pump the gas first and pay afterwards. Whatever the process, make sure to read what it is before you begin to avoid a lot of confusion.

Once you have paid for your gas, proceed to fill the tank.  Make sure you don't get to much gas on the ground, because you'll waste money on gas that you aren't using.

Once the gas is done being pumped, take the gas pump out of the machine and put it in to the gas tank on your car and press the button to start.

Once you are done then remove the pump from the gas tank and make sure to put it back properly. Make sure to have some wipes handy, there is nothing like smelling like gas for the rest of the day.

I hope this article helps someone who was previously afraid to pump their own gas! In some states you can tip your gas attendant and they will fill your gas tank for you.
