Frank, I’m with you all the way. And I AM Malaysian. I think this is very ‘kampung’ Malay humor and it shouldn’t have been translated at all. It is a complete disgrace that Disney put their name to it. What a joke! I completely disallow my 4 yr old from watching it. It is everything I DO NOT WANT my child to be like or sound like!! TQ for your well written article regarding this rubbish programming!

I dont mean to say anything bad; but this is no doubt that the worse idea yet of Disney Asia. What was they thinking; putting this kind of show for kids in Asia. The english pronunciation is so weird if i dont want to say it bluntly that it extremly bad. I dont care that it’s singlish or your type of english; but when you put on show like Disney channel; please do better job; i dont want my kid to speak english half as bad as them.

Hmmm. I’m from the Philippines, and we get this show on Disney Channel: Asia. When I watch this show, I can’t speak Malaysian so the show is dubbed (very very poorly) in English.

Let me be the first to say, this show is NOT for worldwide audience. The dubbing from Malaysian to English is very atrocious, first of all. The accents are very heavy that an English-speaking audience can barely understand what their saying. Makes me cringe most of the time I hear the characters speak

Also, the plots do not make any sense at ALL. There is really no cohesion from one scene to the next. (For example, our heroes will be running away from a boulder in one scene, and perfectly fine in the next scene. It’s never mentioned how they were able to evade the boulder in between the scenes.)

The characterizations are particularly unlikable. I mean, I have a hard time relating to the characters because they rarely ever make sense, and it’s especially difficult to understand their motivation, and why they do what they do. (Not to mention, that all the characters (trhe twins and all their male friends), sans the girl, can be quite the jerkasses most of the time)

The funny moments and gags are not funny at all. Just really incoherent, almost to the point of non-sequitor. (“I have a riddle: what is an elephant with wings?” “I know! I know! An elephant with wings is WEIRD!” “Oh no! He is right!”—WTF?!).

And don’t even get me started with the dialogue. It sounds like everyone on the show can’t get past a 5-year-old’s vocabulary. Maybe understandable, since the main cast is so young. But the sister? The grandma? They could have at least made them a little more articulate.

You say its very cute, and I think that’s true to a certain extent. But it’s hard to pass a couple of jerkass 5-year-old twins sprouting random gibberish, as endearing.

I have a feeling something got lost in the translation. There MUST be a reason why this was such a well-received critical masterpiece, popular with Malaysians everywhere in Malaysia.

But as of now, I stand by my verdict. This [Upin and Ipin (the English dub)] is probably one of the worst shows on Disney Channel Asia for English speakers everywhere. For me, the greatest animated series on the Disney Channel will always be “Phineas and Ferb”. With its witty humor, fast pace, catchy songs, three-dimensional characterizations and an extremely engaging formula, “Phineas and Ferb” gets a 9/10 from me.

But this mess of a travestry of a show, (“Upin and Ipin: English Dub”) will remain a 1.5/10 on my scale.

Good day to you.
