The most massive and longest living species of snakes in the world are from the genus python, eunectes and morelia. Some notable large or long species according their genus like lachesis, snake eater, cobra, pit viper and others were included.

Titanic Boa is the largest snake ever discovered. They were between 12 and 15 meters or 39 and 49 ft in

length and weighed about 1,135 kg or 2,500 lbs with a diameter of 1 m or 40 in at the thickest part of the body.

It is believed to have lived approximately 60 to 58 million years ago, in the Paleocene epoch. It was recently

discovered in Columbia.

larger than any living species of snake. It was the largest snake before the discovery of Titanoboa. Gigantophis

lived approximately 40 million years ago in the southern Sahara where Egypt and Algeria are now situated.

it difficult to obtain “good, healthy” venom for study purposes.

6 kg or 13 lbs with an average lifespan of 20 years. This species is widespread throughout Southeast Asia

and parts of India, but found mostly in forested areas. Its genus name, Ophiophagus, literally means “snake-

eater”, and its diet primarily consists of other snakes, including sizeable pythons and even smaller members of

its own species.

With a maximum verified size of 9.5 m or 31.ft long and weighing 250 kg or 550 lbs, the Green Anaconda is

considered as the “world’s largest squamata”. The largest of all snakes is found in South America and is known

also with common names like Anaconda, Common Anaconda and Water Boa. The eyes are set high on the

head and allow the snake to see out of the water when swimming without exposing its body.

Although much slender than the Anaconda, at 10 m or 33 ft long, the Reticulated Python is the “world’s longest

squamata or scaled reptiles”. It is found in Southeast Asia. Like all pythons, they are non-venomous constrictors

and normally not considered dangerous to man, even though large specimens are powerful enough to kill an

adult and attacks are occasionally reported.

Barbados Threadsnake (Leptotyphlops carlae) –World’s Smallest Snake

In contrast, at 10 cm or 4 in long, the blind Barbados Threadsnake is the smallest snake known to exist. It is

found in Barbados. This snake is “as thin as spaghetti”. The photograph above shows Barbados Threadsnake

on a quarter dollar, a coin with a diameter of 24.26 mm or 0.955 inches.
