Technical and business usages of chemical substances

Millions of chemical compounds are created either naturally or artificially by chemical manufacturers for both industrial and commercial purposes. The most popular compounds used today are alcohols, alkanes, alkenes, ammonia, antioxidants and antiseptics.

Chemical compounds play a very important role in our lives because a variety of household products are manufactured from these chemicals. There are millions of chemical compounds which are created either naturally or artificially by chemical manufacturers for both industrial and commercial purposes. While the applications of chemical compounds are virtually limitless, we will look at the most popular compounds used today:

1. Alcohols

Alcohols are organic compounds made from carbon (C), hydrogen (H) and oxygen (O). Apart from the extremely popular use of being manufactured as commercial liquor, this chemical compound is used by chemical manufacturers to produce fuels, solvents and esters. Esters are generally produced naturally in fruits, but the synthetic production through alcohols has found extensive use in the fragrance industry. Esters are used to enhance the smell of perfumes, room fresheners, food flavorings and many more household products.

2. Alkanes

These are saturated covalent compounds based out of carbon and hydrogen. Generally, alkenes are extremely flammable, colorless and smelly in nature and find its use in the commercial production of wax, natural gas, paraffin and petrol. This range of chemical compounds is extremely in demand due to its utility as a fuel. Several chemical manufacturers produce these compounds in different variations, and their property differs based on the concentration of the constituent elements.

3. Alkenes

Alkenes are unsaturated compounds formed by the combination of carbon and hydrogen. They do not have any direct use, but when mixed with another constituent, they can be highly useful. Ethylene can be readily converted to Ethanol by mixing it with water, and similarly, it can also be polymerized to create useful products like polyethylene. Similarly, alkenes like propene are used to create substances like propanol and poly-propene.

4. Ammonia

The combination of hydrogen and nitrogen causes the formation of ammonia, which has innumerable uses. Chemical manufacturers use ammonia to prepare neutralized acid fertilizers that provides crop with the required amount of nitrogen. Ammonium sulphate and ammonium nitrate are the most popular acid fertilizers manufactured commercially. Moreover, ammonia can be oxidized by combining it with water to produce nitric acid. Nitric acid is used extensively in the dyeing industry, and can also be used to manufacture fertilizers. Similarly, this chemical compound can be used to create a variety of ammonium salts such as ammonium chloride and ammonium phosphate. These ammonium salts find its use in commercial zinc-carbon batteries as it acts as the electrolyte.

5. Antioxidant compounds

Antioxidants are complex molecular structures that can be found naturally or made synthetically. These organic compounds delay the oxidation process by eliminating the highly reactive free radicals. Most chemical manufacturers extensively use anti-oxidants as preservatives in order to protect perishable food items, especially the ones that contain saturated and unsaturated fats. Moreover, antioxidant compounds are also used to delay the ageing of plastic and rubber products.

6. Antiseptics

Organic compounds with specific molecular structures are used as antiseptics by several manufacturers. Compounds like phenol and ethanol are used widely as disinfectants as they kill microorganisms without harming the human skin. Additionally, they are used in hospitals and medical units to clean wounded skin before any operation.
