Everything you Wanted to know about Dungeons and Dragons Part III - Skills
Third in a series of D&D character generation sketches
In the 3.0 and 3.5E games, the next step in creating your character comes with the addition of skill ranks to your character. In the D&D world, your character is capable of anything that you can imagine. What limits him from being able to perform everything under the sun are his skills. In the 3.5E world, a character came with a series of skills:
o Appraise
o Balance
o Bluff
o Climb
o Concentration
o Craft
o Decipher Script
o Diplomacy
o Disable Device
o Disguise
o Escape Artist
o Forgery
o Gather Information
o Handle Animal
o Heal
o Hide
o Intimidate
o Jump
o Knowledge
o Listen
o Move Silently
o Open Lock
o Perform
o Profession
o Ride
o Search
o Sense Motive
o Sleight Of Hand
o Speak Language
o Spellcraft
o Spot
o Survival
o Swim
o Tumble
o Use Magic Device
o Use Rope

To determine one's skill points to spend, simply use the equation presented for one's character class. Secondly distribute it among the point values on the skills chart presented on the character sheet. Remember, no class can have a rank higher than c points more than the present level. This means that at the most, a skill can have rank 4. Distributing skills may take a while, but its well worth thinking about what you'll be using your character as before dedicating skill points to useless skills.
In the 4.0 edition of D&D, Wizards of the coast did away with Skill distribution, opting instead for a series of powers. In the next installment I'll deal with these and their difference between the 3.5E Skill set. Until then Axes high!
